The Birth of a Classic Cocktail.

The Americano cocktail originated in the 1860s at Caffè Campari in Milan, where it was first known as the “Milano-Torino,” a blend of Campari from Milan and sweet vermouth from Turin. This bitter, complex drink was a staple of Italian café culture. In the early 20th century, as American tourists – especially during Prohibition – flocked to Italy, bartenders noticed their preference for lighter drinks and began adding a splash of soda water to the Milano-Torino. The resulting cocktail was dubbed the “Americano” in honor of its new clientele.

The Americano gained international fame when it appeared in Ian Fleming’s 1953 novel Casino Royale as the first cocktail James Bond ever ordered, tying it to a sense of effortless European elegance. Over time, it became a symbol of Italian aperitivo culture and a forerunner to the stronger and more famous Negroni. Its easy-drinking nature, historical ties to American tastes abroad, and association with old-world sophistication have cemented its place as a classic.
